The Bestiary Staircase Cometh!

#6 Friday 11-05-04

The commentary:

The first ever storyline! w00t! The Bestiary Staircase is not my idea. I really and truly did get it from The Repository of Dangerous Things. It's a brilliant webcomic by Amanda Hardy. When she decided to stop drawing the comic indefinitely (possibly forever), she allowed other webcomic artists to "adopt" dangerous things from the repository so they wouldn't just languish forever. Boy am I glad she was nice enough to let me use The Bestiary Staircase, it's awesome! The little stone fox with the nine tails (there aren't nine of them in this picture... one of them is behind him ok?!) is a kyuubi. They're a Japanese critter of mythology who went about causing mischief and were sometimes good luck but sometimes deadly. You will find these animals in many a manga and/or anime.

The commentary:

Our story continues as the mischief-making kyuubi quits his perch on the bestiary staircase in search of... we don't know yet! Muah ha ha.

The commentary:

Today's comic introduces my cute dog, Eppy! She's a Papillon, a toy breed that looks slightly like a fox. You can see pics of her on the characters page.

The commentary:

Simple and sweet but I wanted to add it. Eppy runs for help... what's a dog to do when a moving statue falls in love with her?

The commentary:

Hey, nobody's right all the time, right? Eppy's actual favorite place to defy the world is from behind my legs but I felt it would be funnier if she jumped into my arms and then crawled onto my head to get away from him further. Eppy isn't a chicken (like the time she "protected" me from my boyfriend-- an honest mistake, they weren't formally introduced ya know, how was she to know he was hugging me and not sinking a knife in my back right?), but then again, she doesn't have any illusions about how small she is either. The average Chihuahua thinks it can take down a grizzly bear single-pawed. But Eppy is a shrewd little dog. She knows when it's time to yelp for backup. I guess when a living statue falls in love with you and chases you around it's one of those times.

The commentary:

Took me long enough, didn't it? ;) The plot of the bestiary staircase thickens. What secret is it hiding? You will soon find out!

The commentary :

I was so afraid this would happen, and it did! Eeeek! I broke my promise. I'm so sorry. It's Tuesday, not Saturday. But, I will stick to the Saturday promise anyhow, this is just a temporary setback. I unfortunately had to suddenly leave home for a couple days (my parents weren't in town and I had to care for the doggies) so that's why the comic is late. This coming week's should not be, but since I have to move on Friday... well, it might be. So I apologize in advance. I'm trying!

Anyway, on the comic: at last the secrets of the bestiary staircase are being revealed! Muah ha ha!

The Commentary:

As promised, a new comic today, and once a day 'till next Saturday, when the Saturday update resumes. I'm trying to cut down on time it takes to make the comic by using my tablet instead of scanning my pencil drawings. It does cut down on time, unfortunately, it seems to cut on quality too, because I'm NOT used to the tablet yet. So I may or may not continue using it, because I'm already enough of a beginner as an artist. The comic is supposed to be getting better, not worse. ;)

The bestiary staircase storyline is going to be wrapped up by the end of this week. I may or may not take it up again. But next week starts the new storyline. I hope you'll like it, I'm doing better with scripting now!

The Commentary:

This was my second attempt with the tablet and it didn't turn out as nice, but I intend to stubbornly continue using the tablet until I come up with comics that look decent. Not to say I've abandoned my pencil and paper, because I haven't. It's just that doing it straight into the computer is the height of convenience for me, especially since I'm in a temporary living situation and most of my stuff is in boxes, and that includes the scanner!

It seems Eppy's resigned herself to being a little more civil about the fox's advances... but that doesn't mean she likes it.

The commentary:

I plan to redo this later in a more artistic fashion so that people can use it as a background or whatever should they so desire. But for now here's the rough draft.
